Sally LaForge

Sally was born in Paris and later moved to the U.S.  In 1950, she was one of only four women (in a class of 800) to graduate with an engineering degree from UC Berkeley. She earned a Master of Science in Engineering from UCLA as well as her pilot license in 1952. She joined the 99s LA chapter in 1954 and held every board officer role for our chapter.

Sally LaForgeSally had a long career with Hughes Aircraft (now Hughes Helicopters) as a design engineer, working on all performance and handling qualities. With a specialty in aerodynamics, she taught a UCLA extension course in helicopter theory. In 1986, she became a consultant for RAND Corporation for their study of Comanche aircraft. 

She was also a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol, President of the American Helicopter Society and board member of the Santa Monica Airport Association.  She was an expert pilot, sail pilot, and a keen air racer, participating in several races, including the AWTAR, Angel Derby, Pacific Air Race and our local, Palms to Pines race.

Sally flew to new horizons on Oct 16, 2004.
